Wrought iron is the look most people picture for an Encino gate: dark bars, a clean top rail, maybe an arch or a few scrolls. Done well it can last decades. What "wrought iron" means today
Almost nothing sold as wrought iron now is true wrought iron. It is mild steel, shaped and welded to look forged, then primed and finished. That's no trick; it's stronger and easier to repair. What matters is how it's made: the bar, the welds and the finish.
Ask for:
- Solid or heavy wall bar for driveway gate pickets, not thin tube that dents when a bumper touches it.
- Welds that are ground and sealed, especially where pickets meet the bottom rail, where water sits.
- A real finish system: cleaned or blasted steel, a metal primer, then a hard topcoat or powder coat. Paint over mill scale peels first.
Details that make it look right
Collars, twisted pickets, spear or ball finials, scroll bands and an arched top rail. A little goes a long way. On a Spanish or Mediterranean house, a simple arch with one scroll band beats a gate covered in ornament. On a ranch or modern house, plain square pickets and a flat rail usually suit best.
Color counts too. Satin black is the default. Deep green works well against stucco and planting, and it matters near Mulholland (below).
Height and the front yard
An iron gate in the required front yard follows the city's limit: three and a half feet on R zoned lots, six feet on RA or A zoned lots, and eight feet only with a Zoning Administrator's approval. (LAMC 12.22 C.20(f)(2)) Being see-through earns no extra height. The code gives open wrought iron a six foot front yard limit only inside a Fence Height District (LAMC 13.10), and Encino has none.
So a front yard iron fence on a typical R zoned lot is about waist high. Taller iron needs an RA or A zoned lot, a Zoning Administrator approval, or a spot outside the required front yard, where side and rear limits apply: eight feet on lots 40 feet or wider outside the Hillside Area, six feet on narrower lots or inside it (LAMC 12.22 C.20(f)(3)). Near Mulholland
Within five hundred feet of the Mulholland Drive right of way, fences, gates and walls visible from Mulholland must use a short list of materials: rough cut unfinished wood, native type stone, split face concrete block, textured plaster, black or dark green chain link or wrought iron, or a mix. (Mulholland Scenic Parkway Specific Plan, Ordinance 167,943, Section 5)
For an iron gate that means black or dark green, between stone, block or plaster pillars. Bright or bare metal is not on the list.
Hinges and posts
Iron is heavy, and a whole driveway leaf hangs on two or three hinges and one post. Heavy barrel or ball bearing hinges, welded where possible, on a post set deep in concrete, keep the leaf from dropping. When an older iron gate drags, the post or hinge has usually moved before the gate bent.
Rust, and when to repair
Rust starts low: along the bottom rail, where the pickets meet it, and at the foot of the hinge post, where sprinkler water and rain sit. Surface rust can be cleaned to sound metal, primed and refinished. A rail rusted through gets its bad length replaced with new steel welded in. Replace the gate when rot runs through the frame or the leaf is bent past straightening.
Keeping sprinklers off the gate and touching up chips early does more for its life than anything else.
Questions about wrought iron gates
Is wrought iron better than steel for a gate?
Nearly every modern "wrought iron" gate is steel made to look forged, and that's a good thing: it's strong, easy to weld and easy to repair. What separates a good gate from a poor one is bar size, weld quality and the finish, so ask about those rather than the name.
How tall can an iron front fence be in Encino?
